A Piemontese dinner at Bar Trattoria Semplice

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Another great night was had last night at Bar Trattoria Semplice, where we hosted a Piemontese dinner that was incredible. We waded through some tremendous wines that were showing brilliantly with the food. My notes on these are below. If you think you may be interested in purchasing any of these or indeed coming along to our next night please get in touch keith@viaggiovino.co.uk

All prices include VAT

Weger Pinot Grigio £17.00

Mid yellow colour still with some green tinges, open and expressive nose, honey, lemon and nut fruit characters found here and on the palate. The palate is dry and full of crisp ‘apple crunchy’ acidity that makes the mouth water just before being impacted by all of the fruits we found on the nose. A good, long length that leaves hazelnut wandering about for some time after the wine has departed. Drinking now and will go on for 2-3 more years

Gagliasso Dolcetto £15.00

Bright ruby colour, fruit driven nose, full of cherry and spice. Dry palate that fills out with red fruits and underlying spice and vanilla. Firm tannic structure balanced well with grape acidic structure. Medium length. Drinking now 1-2 years

Valraldo Sori Loreto 2001 £42.00

Bright and light garnet colour, beautiful feminine nose, elegant fruit characters of strawberry, mint, nutmeg, vanilla and herbs. These are all found in abundance on the surprisingly expansive palate. The palate is very silky and dry, the fruits are restrained and so plentiful that it becomes hard to swallow in case you miss something. Tight grained yet superbly ripe tannins are well cut with mineral lined acidity. The length just goes on and on and on… Drinking now and will continue to rise to a crescendo over the next decade.

Gagliasso Barolo 2005 £28.00

Light Brick red colour, wonderful nose of cherries, vanilla and mint. Broad palate that is awash with strong, dark cherry fruit and herbaceous fruit characters. Firm ripe tannins are well in balance with the delicious fruit and fine acidity. Drinking now and for a further 5-8 years.

Gagliasso Barolo Rocche dell’ Annunziata 2005 £45.00

Again a bright brick, garnet colour from the rim to the core of the wine. Powerful Nebbiolo nose that has got to be the benchmark for all to follow. Bountiful quantities of Black cherry, chocolate, tobacco, eucalyptus jump from the glass. These are all represented well on the palate with the addition of truffle and vanilla spice. Very firm and grippy tannins (fruit and wood) blend seamlessly with the massive fruit base and fine grained tannins. This is as dominating a glass of wine as anyone should hope to drink. Drinking now (ish) and for a further 10-15 years

Varaldo – Barbaresco, Piedmonte

Barbaresco Sori Loreto 2001 £39.00

Once again (as this is about the 6th time of tasting this) showing the beautiful nose of black cherries and vanilla with undertones of spicy oak. The wine fills the mouth from the off, luscious, sweet fruit tempered with firm grippy tannins and  tingling acidity. Although starting to show signs of secondary fruit this is still a very young wine that would pay back some patient cellaring.

Odoardi – Calabria

Savuto Rosso 2005 £15.50

Bright ruby colour looking very vibrant. Open and powerful nose full of red fruits and herbs, some lavender detected. The palate is full and sweet and surprisingly giving. Rounded tannins are in fine balance with just the right amount of  acidity. Excellent now and for the next 3-5 years.

Vigna Garrone 2004 £27.00

Deep broading inky blue/red. Dense nose that isn’t very giving at the moment. The palate backs up these initial findings. The wine is serious and currently unforgiving. It’s almost impossible to believe that this already has five years of age, it feels as though it is only a one-year-old. Certainly not a wine to be consumed now but definitely one to buy and tuck away for a decade.

Gagliasso  - La Morra, Piemonte

Barbera Cru “ Vigna Ciabot Rus “ 2005 £22.75

Wonderful garnet colour with orange tinges. The nose is evolved and open, oodles of black fruits, vanilla ice cream and hazelnuts on the nose and palate. Easy going palate, ripe fruit, soft tannins and fine acidity make this an eminently quaffable wine. Simply delicious.

Barolo “ Rocche dell,annunziata “ 2005 £36.85

WOW! Light ruby colour that totally belies the power of this awesome wine. The nose soars from the glass abound with Chocolate, mint, cherries, sherry, nuts and spice, on returning to the nose after a minute a completely new level of aromas have appeared, almost Ferna-Brancaesque; Medicinal herbs and spices, cloves and thyme… astounding!! The palate does the nose full justice, A multitude of fruits, herbs and spices swirl about the mouth layered between fine grained tannic structure and mineral laced acidity. The finish is quite literally endless, I gave up counting after 90 seconds. Although very drinkable and approachable right now I think this wine has a very long life ahead. Outstanding example of Barolo making.
