BORGO DEL TIGLIO Friuli
Nicola Manferrari is a winemaker who regularly turns out some of Italy’s most outstanding and complex whites. The 8 hectare estate is divided into three vineyard sites, and as they have very defined microclimates and soil composition, each location is planted with a specific grape variety. The cooler, more inland, Rutars and Ca’ de le Vallade plots are planted with Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Riesling, while the vineyards around the cellar at Brazzano, directly overlooking the warm Adriatic, are planted with Malvasia, Tocai Friulano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaking is of the highest standard with yields of 30 to 40 hls per hectare from the vineyards. Nearly all the wines mature in small, specially commissioned oak barrels – so that the volume of the fermenting tanks is exactly divisible by the barrel size; very handy when it comes to blending the cuvee. The Collio Bianco is a blend of mainly Tocai Friulano with Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Rhine Riesling, displaying a smoky and savoury quality.
