CANTINA TERLANO Alto Adige

High up in the Alto Adige, clinging to a cliff wall left behind by an ancient glacier, is the winery of Terlano. The vineyards are owned by a number of producers, all with tiny plots, which are hand cut to form terraces in the crystal and rock strewn mountainside. These plots continue right up the slopes to 1000 meters altitude. Here some of the finest and most long-lived white wines in the world are born. Three tiers of wine are produced (if you exclude the fantastic one litre screw top bottles everyone drinks in the village!). The “Classics” range is fermented exclusively in stainless steel producing intense varietal wines. The “Vineyards” range is aged in 50 hectolitre oak barrels that plump up the fruit sourced from single vineyard plots. And the “Selections” range uses fruit sourced from the best plots and partly vinified in barrique, adding fullness, complexity, elegance, longevity but, crucially, not oakiness. We are delighted this year to have access to some of the Chardonnay Rarita from the fantastic 1994 vintage. Fermented partially in barrique, aged on its lees in 25 hectoliters stainless steel barrels for nearly 9 years, finally bottled (all 3,340 of them) in September of 2003, and then given another 18 months before release. An unique wine. We have occasional access to other old vintages direct from the Terlano cellars, so ask us what else we might have available.
