CASCINA CA’ROSSA, CANALE Piemonte

This agricultural concern was formed in 1967 when Alfonso Ferrio bought a farmhouse situated in the oldest parcel of vines on the estate. Before 1995 the wine was vinified and sold in bulk, typical of most agricultural firms at the time. Bottling of wines from the estate began in 1995 The enterprise comprises 13 hectares (about 48 acres) of ground in Roero, a hill area which reaches into the province of Cuneo between the Langhe and the Monferrato. The rows cover mostly very steep terrain, so hand tending is required. Angelo Ferrio is now in charge of every step, from vineyard work to winemaking. The yields are low; his dedication and attention to detail from vine to bottle is truly impressive. Combine this inherent skill and passion with its excellent vineyard site and you end up with the remarkably impressive range of wines that is Ca’Rossa. Barbera Mulassa is a reserve style wine that results from 12 months barrique ageing. This cuvee is produced in limited quantity - the vines have an average age of 45 years. Barbera Mulassa is a full bodied wine. The bouquet displays admirable finesse offering aromas of red and black fruit. Roero Mompissano 2003 from 100% nebbiolo is also a cru, an elegant and complex wine with clean fruit and great mineral acidity.
