LE SALETTE Veneto

La Salette is well established as one of the leading producers in Valpolicella. Each wine from the Le Salette stable comes from a specific vineyard plot. Winemaker and proprietor Franco Scamperle is adamant that each wine must be allowed to express the character of the soil where the grapes were grown. As such, blending between the vineyards does not take place, except with the Valpolicella Classico. In the vineyard the classic triumvirate of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes are grown, and more unusually (and totally legally) some Sangiovese, Barbera, Teroldego, Cabernet and a few others for luck. Up to 15% of these varieties can go into most blends in Valpolicella, and in the case of Le Salette help to produce a unique style of wine. The Valpolicella Classico is enchanting, light and fresh with exuberant fruit and a lively palate. Valpolicella I Progni, made by the ripasso method, involving a secondary fermentation on the lees of the Recioto, is perfumed and juicy with surprising longevity. Ca’ Carnocchio is produced entirely from dried grapes (though for less time than the Amarone) and as such can be looked at as mini Amarone. The Pergole Vece Amarone, made only in exceptional years, is subjected to extended drying (6 months), and aged entirely in barrique, one of the few Amarone that has enough structure to take such treatment. The La Marega Amarone is made every year in greater or lesser quantities. It is dried for a month less and aged in large Slovenian oak barrels, with only about 40% in barrique.
